Awesome art gifts from Wisdom book artist

Posted on March 22nd, 2013 in Art, Books, Products

A little while ago I reviewed Wisdom by Darcy Pattinson and Kitty Harvill. I recently learned that Kitty Harvill has an online shop with Zazzle and she has some of her fabulous art reproduced on a great selection of products. If you liked the art in Wisdom, you should definitely check out her shop! Here are some of my favorites that I found while browsing through her selection.

What’s a nird? Funny Amazon.com typo

Posted on February 16th, 2013 in Birding Blooper, Books, Funny, Products

A while back I came across a funny typo on Amazon.com. The title of the book RSPB British Birdfinder was instead indicated to be a Nirdfinder. The error has since been corrected.

Promo Video: The New Birders

This short promotional video does a good job of explaining how some birders use birding smartphone apps in the field.

Share your Wingscapes photos!

Posted on January 8th, 2013 in Backyard Birds, Funny, Products

Did you get a new Wingscapes BirdCam for Christmas? Consider sharing your photos with the Wingscapes BirdCam Flickr group. The group is fun to browse, with BirdCammers located all over the world. Your photos can contribute! At one time the creators of the camera kept a life list of all species captured via their product; I’m not sure they still do this, but you never know. Your cam might just capture something that’s never been BirdCammed before!

Awesome birder earrings

Posted on January 7th, 2013 in Products

I saw this display of earrings at the Merritt Island NWR visitor center and fell in love. They are designed and produced by a small company called Jabebo.

Jabebo

In each pair of earrings, two different images complement each other. I enlarged a few of them below so you can see what I mean. My pictures don’t really do these intricate designs justice; you can see them all (including other science-themed sets besides birds) at the Jabebo website. My favorites are the American Robin & nest, Mockingbird (seen below), Osprey (seen below), Saw-whet Owl, and the Northern Flicker (yellow-shafted). I would love to see a Barred Owl in their offering!

The earrings are minature images pressed onto a double layer of post-consumer cereal box cardboard. The display cards are made of the same material. You can read more about the process on the Jabebo website.

The earrings are mostly sold at nature centers and wildlife preserves; you can find out where to buy them in your area here.

Awesome New Bird Tees @ Threadless

Posted on November 24th, 2012 in Pop Culture, Products

If you’re like me, you’re always on the lookout for cool and unique bird t-shirts. Threadless usually has a bunch of great bird designs in their collection, and right now they have a Black Friday sale going all weekend with shirts as low as $9.99 and hoodies from $29.99. I am going to pick up this new one, on sale for $9.99. Sweet:

You’re a Hoot from Threadless

This next one caught my eye, and I like the concept, but I’m not sure I’d wear it. I guess flamingos aren’t exactly my favorite bird. The design is clever, though. This one isn’t on sale right now; shirts are $19.50. It’s called Bird Brain:

Bird Brain from Threadless

Here is an all-over (front and back) print design based on a photograph, part of a design challenge called Threadless Loves Photography. The designer says the photo was taken in Paris; my guess is the birds are European Starlings. What do you think? I like it and I might pick up this one, too. Shirts are on sale for $9.99. You can also pick up this design on phone cases or wall art.

I from Threadless

Below is another great owl design. Owls are so popular right now and Threadless usually has a great collection of different owl designs with both realistic illustrations and clever cartoon-like art. I am thinking of picking up this one, too – it looks great on a hoodie and it’s on sale for $29.99.

Vanishing in the Night from Threadless

This last one cracks me up. It was created using clipart from CSA Images in another Threadless challenge. It’s called Oh My, How Delightful! and it’s wickedly funny, don’t you think? This one isn’t on sale right now, so t-shirts are priced at $19.50 for now.

The Black Friday weekend sale ends on Cyber Monday, November 26, at 11:50PM CT.

SALE: Latest Bird T-Shirts @ Threadless

Posted on August 30th, 2012 in Pop Culture, Products

Threadless has a super sale going on right now with shirts as low as $9.95. There are always some awesome bird t-shirts in the mix. Here are a few that I haven’t highlighted before.

Tweet is on sale for $9.99. Twitter has naturally always been associated with birds; this cute design has two tweetin’ birds hanging out on a branch together.

Raven ($9.99 on sale) is my favorite of this bunch. Got Ravens on my mind lately… you’ll see why soon. ;)

Those Damn Birds is available on sale shirts ($9.99) and iPhone cases (from $37.50). I like this clever Alfred Hitchcock “The Birds” tribute gag design.

Them Birds ($9.99 on sale) is an awesome Alfred Hitchcock / Angry Birds mashup.

Flamenco (from $9.95 on sale; also iPhone cases) is a lovely artistic watercolor-style design. The super-pink flamingos look great on the lighter pink background.

A few of the Threadless bird shirts I mentioned in previous posts [Favorite Owl T-Shirts and Bird Tees @ Threadless] are available in this sale, too.

Owl Nebula: $12.95 Girly Boat Neck Tee only
Bird Nests: $9.95 Guys Organic Jersey Tee only
Owls Ask Too Many Questions: $9.95 Guys Tee
Field Study 01: from $9.99; several styles
The Incredible Hawk: Threadless Zip Hoody @$24.95
Song Bird: $9.95 Girly styles
The Northern Black-capped Gumchewer: $9.99; Guys & Girly styles
Bird Brain: $9.95 Girly Open Neck Tee only

The sale ends on August 31st at 10AM Central, but since quantities are limited these styles might sell out before the sale is over. If you see something you like, better not wait!
